For 25 years, SharePoint has quietly powered how we work.
It’s sat behind document management, intranets, Teams, OneDrive and more — rarely glamorous, but absolutely essential. Now, as Microsoft doubles down on AI, SharePoint is stepping into a much more visible role.
The AI era isn’t coming. It’s already here.
And Microsoft has reimagined SharePoint to match it.
In the video embedded above, we walk through the brand‑new SharePoint experience, what’s changed, and what’s coming next. Here’s the key take‑aways.
Why SharePoint Matters More Than Ever
Since the move to SharePoint Modern, the platform’s role has expanded dramatically.
Today, SharePoint is:
- The foundation of Microsoft Teams
- The backbone of the new OneDrive experience
- The content layer behind Viva Connections
- And crucially, the knowledge platform that powers Microsoft Copilot
Think of it this way:
If Copilot is your AI assistant, SharePoint is the library it learns from.
If that library is cluttered or poorly structured, Copilot can’t deliver value.
This new SharePoint experience is Microsoft’s answer to that challenge.
A New Experience Built Around How We Work
Microsoft has redesigned SharePoint around three core activities:
Discover
A personalised view of everything relevant to you:
- Sites and files you work with
- News from across your organisation
- Favourite and recently accessed content
- People you collaborate with most
Discover makes it far quicker to find what matters — without jumping between apps or sites.
Publish
Publishing content is now simpler and more centralised.
The new Publish experience brings together:
- Page and news templates
- Recent drafts
- Content you’re actively working on
Over the coming months, Microsoft will also introduce new page templates and, later this year, Copilot‑assisted page authoring, making content creation faster and far more interactive.
Build
Build is a single place to create:
- SharePoint sites
- Lists
- Document libraries
- Even SharePoint agents
Microsoft is also heading towards a future where you can describe what you want to build to Copilot, and SharePoint will create it dynamically for you.
What Else Is Coming?
This update is just the start. Microsoft has already announced several improvements rolling out over the next few months, including:
- A new Resources web part managed from a single list
- A dedicated Announcements web part in SharePoint
- New News layouts inspired by Viva Connections
- Better control over the SharePoint app experience in Teams, including mobile
All of this points to a cleaner, more connected experience across Microsoft 365.
Rollout Timeline
- Preview available now for SharePoint admins
- Targeted release through April
- General availability by late May
The new experience can be enabled quickly via the SharePoint Admin Centre, and users can opt out if needed — though many won’t want to.
The Bigger Picture
This isn’t just a UI refresh.
It’s SharePoint being repositioned as what it’s always been — now made explicit:
The content engine that sits behind modern work and AI.
By improving discovery, simplifying publishing, and making it easier to build solutions, Microsoft is laying the foundations for everything Copilot will deliver next.
